"American?" said the man drinking cappucino at the outdoor cafe,
" Welcome to Libya, we are happy to see you here!"
Our trepidation dissolved, as we were generously shown all that
this sleepy, yet modern country has preserved in it's 12,000 year
history of civilization. Tripoli, with it's white washed facades,
and Turkish mosques, is Mediterranean in flavor. We wandered
through the medina, marveling at the meandering alleys of the souq,
the buildings layered with evidence of Caravans, Ottomons and Romans.
Our first week was filled with warring Greek gods and Roman excess,
seen at the finest Roman and Greek cities on the Mediterranaean.
Leptis Magna, Sabratha and Cyrene produced mosaics, statues,
amphitheaters and baths at the artistic height of each empire.
The second week was spent camping in the Sahara desert. Our Tuareg
jeep drivers raced and bounced us over steep sand dunes, wrapped turban
shesh on our heads for our three day camel ride, then sang haunting
traditional love songs to a tribal drum beat, under a full moon and meteor
filled sky. We saw 10,000 year old rock art pictures of grazing giraffes, hippos,
and hunting stories on ancient wadi walls. We visited oases of water in the
middle of the Great Sand Sea, found ocean fossils, and bought jewelry from
Tuareg nomads. It was a truly magical trip!!

Awesome Sunni!!!!

Those are such cute shots of you!!!

Did you travel by yourself????

We had a little trip back to Chicago, you can see our pics if you come to my site. We need to know how to upload and make the pics come out like you do instead of starting a new comments everytime.

Hey,
Thanks for coming by to see
my Libya photos. This trip was
so much fun!!!! I went with a
small group,(11), tour company.
It seems like every tour company has
Libya on their lists now, including the big
Mediterranean cruise ships. So, my reason
for going was to see it, before it gets spoiled
and overrun!!!
You can go without a tour company, but it
it would be difficult to get around...and even
if you go with one more person you're required
to travel with a security police who protects
the ancient treasures from being damaged
by tourists. (past tourists chipped off pieces
of rock art)
If you love to travel...see Libya soon!!!

Hi Sunni,

We went to Libya through your photos. My daughter Marissa(8 years) commented that you have a beautiful blog site.

Your photos bring to mind wind blown desert dunes, mysterious and darkly handsome turban wrapped desert shieks and the magic and romance of the desert. Awesome and inspiring!

Sunni, AWESOME pictures and what a trip!!!!

Sunni Wow! What special pictures...how cool you got to take that trip! Always nice to see you!
xoxo

Lots of tour companies are
going to Libya now, including
Mediterranean Cruise Ships.
And there is a wide range of
pricing!!! The tour company I went with
is on the high end, but they are excellent.
Wilderness Travel, in Berkeley, CA.
Also Adventure Center brokers several
British and Aussie tour companies that
are quite a bit cheaper, and they offer
almost the same trip. Their names are
Explore, or Exodus,or Intrepid Travel, or
Mountain Travel Sobek, (higher $$$), or
Elder Treks. Or if you can figure out how to
tap directly into the British tour market,
they run their trips a lot cheaper than US
companies. Try Travelsphere Ltd. Hope
this helps!! There's lots to chose from!!!

Hi Phyl,
In case you check back,
here are a few other tour
operators that are excellent
and offer Libya...
1)Archaelogical Tours (I know someone
who only travels with this company and
loves going with a PHD archaeologist!!)
www.archaeologicaltrs.com
2)Distant Horizons
www.distant-horizons.com
3)Geographic Expeditions (www.geoex.com)

These three are longer and spendier, but
maybe worth the extra cost as you go with
someone who is an expert in the area.
